The Minor Arcana (Atziluth)
About the Minor Arcana Expand
The Minor Arcana consists of 56 cards divided into four suits, each corresponding to one of the classical elements: Wands (Fire), Cups (Water), Swords (Air), and Disks (Earth). Where the Major Arcana maps onto the 22 paths of the Tree of Life, the Minor Arcana maps onto the Tree's structure itself.
Each suit contains ten numbered cards and four court cards. The numbered cards, called pips, correspond to the ten sephiroth - the Ace of each suit is Kether in that element, the Two is Chokmah, and so on down to the Ten in Malkuth. The pip cards from Two through Ten also carry astrological decans, assigning each card a specific planetary force operating through a specific zodiacal sign. The card's meaning arises from the intersection of its sephirah, its element, and its decan - three systems reinforcing one another.
The court cards follow Crowley's redesign of the traditional system. Knights (not Kings) are the fiery aspect of each suit, Queens the watery, Princes the airy, and Princesses the earthy. Each court card governs a portion of the zodiacal wheel, with the Princesses ruling the quadrants around the North Pole - the "thrones of the Aces" from which the elemental force of each suit originates.
